Laying of flexibles

Description

Flexible oil, gas or water lines, service and control umbilicals, power and fiber optical cables, and coil tubing are typically laid on seabed using a dedicated vessel with carousel and/or deck reels. As an example, the first termination head on an umbilical may be attached with a hold-back wire to a subsea structure after lay down. A tensioner is used on deck at the overboarding chute to ensure control of the product storage. During laying an ROV is used to continuously monitor touch-down. Electrical and fluid integrity of the product is monitored topside if required. The second termination head is landed inside the target box area by use of an abandonment wire, or an active heave compensated vessel crane may also be used to reduce impact or loss of visibility.

Scope of Work

The scope of work may be a complete installation comprising of:

  • Lay-route survey and required metrology
  • Planning and engineering, including catenary and lay analysis
  • Corridor ploughing and topographical irregularity reduction
  • Lay-route and target area clearing and preparations
  • Product load-out with appropriate safety measures for (e.g. coil tubing storage)
  • Laying, including possibility for trenching and / or product protection installation
  • Product testing
  • Removal of installation aid structures and initiation rigging
  • As-laid survey

Tie-in of the flexible and umbilical products to a subsea structure or necessary pull-in on a platform can be part of the scope of work, along with the final as-installed survey documentation. Rock dumping with a dedicated fall-pipe vessel may be supplied through DeepOcean. The product to be installed is normally supplied by the customer.
